Village of Celsa

In the XVIII century the Castle lost its importance, before abandonded by noble families and increasingly isolated from the rest of the island, and then destroyed by a bombing in 1809. Afterwards it was abandoned for a long time and then privatezed.

The ancient village of Ischia Ponte, also called Village of Celsa for the presence of mulberries, is an ancient village of sailors and fishermen, dating back to the XIII century.

Single centre of Ischia, traditional more than anything else, always devoted to fishing, the village has had a major expansion at the end of the ' 700, with the end of the pirates, when the attention is no more on the Castle, until then the primary center of living and shelter, and back to focus on the mainland.

Throughout the 18th Ischia Ponte is the richest and most prosperous municipality of the island, its fate is progressively moving away from the Castle which is going through a period of decline following the abandonment of the wealthy and noble families

In time the structure of the village, with narrow alleys, palaces alternated with low houses, has preserved its original aspect, as well as the famous via Roma and Corso Vittoria Colonna that lead to "Mandra", the ancient village of fishermen.

The beautiful Cathedral of Assunta, built in 1301 and remodelled in 1700, has instead crossed several vicissitudes and then was bombed by the British in 1809. The crypt, decorated with frescoes of Giotto's school, still preserves the remains of the noble families of the island.

The port of Ischia ponte remained the preferred by islanders for a long time even after the opening of the Borbonico port. This fondness has helped to preserve the rich activity of the island.

We recommend to take the route according to the following criteria: via Seminar (1-2-3), via Marina (4), via Mazzella, vico Stradone (5), Aragonese, via Lungomare Mazzella (6), by G.G. della Croce (7), via g.
