The picturesque village of Forio

Forio, known erroneously as Forio d’Ischia, with its 13 km of territory, is the largest municipality of the island. According to Mr. Jasolino of the XVI century, the name Forio derives fromFiorio because after the demolition of villas and castles, fiorì Being the largest municipality of the Island, equipped with 12 towers, artillery and valiant people, other historians consider the term from phoros (fertile), other from the greek term (village).

Forio was invaded by Saracens and the signs of this incursions are visible in the architecture, in fact along the coast several sighting towers rise up like the famous Torrione. In 19050’s many artists met in Piazza del Comune, fascinated by the beauty of the places and the inhabitants’ hospitality.

Very picturesque is the town centre with its palaces, paths, locals, little artisan shops, churches rich in history and art. Very famous is the church of Soccorso, situated in the splendid square of Giovanni Paolo II (recently restructured on the occasion of the Pope’s visit on May 5th 2002), overlooking the sea. This square is one of the few places in the world where it is possible to admire the spectacular of the green ray : It is an optical illusion during the sunset but also when the sun rises, in base on the light’s position.

There are also opportunities for shopping: along the main street we find shops ranging from the typical products of the island, ceramics, & nbsp; to the coolest clothes.

Interesting, especially from a tourist point of view, are the several beaches, including the Beach of St. Francesco di Paola and Chiaia, in the northern part of town, and Citara with the famous thermal park Poseidon gardens, in the southern section. Very interesting and beauty are the La Mortella gardens, unique in their genre and definitely worth visiting for those who decide to spend vacation on this beautiful island.
