Historical Info

Following the expansion that transformed the small chapel built by the sailors in the fourteenth century S. Maria di Loreto church, to allow to continue their devotions, was built in 1585 next to the church a chapel dedicated to the Assumption. In 1772 it was enlarged and enriched with fine stucco work performed by the Neapolitans, Nicola Moschetti e Tommaso Bruccino. It has a single nave, with the monumental polychrome marble altar and the choir beautiful inlaid and decorated in gold leaf. In 1831 it became a Archconfraternity .. Architecturally it follows the baroque style, the ceiling is barrel lunette decorated with stucco cornices and light elliptical. On either side of the oratory, there are wooden seats with three shelves, with small pilasters and balustrades, turned with great simplicity. On the altar stands the great altar-piece, Gian Andrea D'Aloisio (XVIII); eight paintings on the walls in the shape of the medallion, Severino Galante (1789), with episodes from the life of the Virgin, S. Joseph and St. Vitus, and two paintings by Gaetano Martini (1811) with the figures of S. John Joseph of the Cross and St. Antonio of Padua.
