Church of the Nativity of Our Lady

Description

The Russo Family in the first half of the XVII century, founded the church with two cells for hermits. The church, dedicated to Our Lady of Montevergine, was expanded in early 800 by a certain hermit Baldino. The altar and the balustrade removed in recent times, with the coat of arms Siniscalchi, were colored marble, dating from the mid eighteenth century. The stucco plasterer Dominico Savino, decorated the walls and ceiling and still can be seen in garlands of ivy, oak, roses and stars. On the altar hung a painting of the Madonna and Saints of the eighteenth century that is still exposed to the veneration of the faithful. Generally the church was closed and when opened , welcomed pilgrims from all over the islands of Ischia and Procida, on the Celebration of September 8 (Nativity of Mary), went on numerous hill Schiappone. Before March 15, 1953, when Bishop E. De Laurentis raised it to the parish with the title of Santa Maria di Montevergine and gave the young priest, Don Luigi Di Iorio who took possession on next March 19, the church belonging to Schiappone was served by hermits.

Holy Trinity Church at Cretaio

Description

In the area of Cretaio, a small church dedicated to the Holy Crucifix stands. It was built by the noble Francesco Menga in 1731 and was destroyed by an earthquake in 1883 and later rebuilt. The church presents a simple architectural structure with a single polychrome marble altar and a nave, dominated by a large wooden cross of exquisite workmanship, dating back to 1700. Don Attilio Buono, told us that the church was built because one day a donkey with a crucifix (the present), left from Casamicciola. The donkey stood in a large orchard in which he threw himself on the ground and refused to continue. So in this place the inhabitants decided to build a chapel which enshrines the Crucifix. Inside there are tombstones that recall the historical stages. The city hall of Barano has expropriated it by owners, restored and returned to the faith of those who want to go there (as usual) on Fridays of Lent for the sacred rites. In the afternoon of the last Friday of Lent it is customary to celebrate a moving feature, with large participation of people: it is a way of the Cross that starts from the church and street through Cretaio up to the parish of SS. Mother in Fiaiano.

Church of San Sebastiano Martire

Description

Probably built in the late sixteenth century., it was site of an Augustinian convent until 1653. It houses several paintings by Alfonso Di lacchese Spigna. The half-length statue of San Sebastian dates back to the eighteenth century ..

Church of S. Giuseppe and Anna

Description

In 1849 Carlo Santucci rented in Barano some land to cultivate and where building his home. In the neighborhood he built also a church, now known as the Church of St. Anna, but the founder dedicated it to St. Joseph. It was inaugurated on June 6, 1859 and Santucci asked the bishop to make it free to the public. Inside the church there were four altars dedicated to St. Joseph, St. Anne, Madonna of the Rosary, St. Charles Borromeo and a painting by Bernardo Nights, depicting the Deposition.
Another marble slab, next to the donation area, indicating the burial of Carlo Maria Santucci and his wife Maria Raffaella Siniscalchi but, died in Naples, were never buried in the church of Fiaiano. In 1866, Carlo Maria Santucci de Magistris cited endowed the church also has a bell tower, on which he intended to put a clock built by '"architect" of Matthias Buonopane Casapulla of Caserta. On 27 December 1965 was a parish by Bishop Dino Tomassini with the title of Mary. Of the Church.
Today the church, a nave with a barrel vault, shows a single altar, central composite style and colored marble, the work of Hyginus Cianciarelli, which was opened on a niche that keeps the statue of S . Joseph. Inside, there are statues of the Immaculate Conception, St. Anne and St. Gerard, two crucifixes, one of which wood purchased by the parish priest Fr Attilio good in the 70s and from a private collection. Exquisite, finally, the seventeenth-century picture of St. Joseph with Child, as reported by the pastor, has been attributed by some to the school of Caravaggio and others to that of the Spaniard.

St Mary la Porta Church

Description

Stands in the center of the square dedicated to the memory of Canon Luigi Scotti, and was founded as a chapel in 1750 under the name of the Immaculate Conception church. Around 1866 it was enlarged with two other altars, St. Joseph and St Mary la Porta. The Immaculate was placed in the right aisle, where today there is the tomb which contains the mortal remains of the brothers mons.GiovanniScotti, Archbishop of Rosarno Calabro, and mons.Ciro, general vicar of the Diocese of Ischia. The parish church was built in 1920, it consists of three naves, with four altars, a painting of the Immaculate Conception of 1700, of exquisite workmanship, belonging to the Spanish school of painting by Murillo, an old wooden cross, perhaps 600. On the facade of the church is placed an image of the Virgin tiled desired by the parish priest, Father Vincenzo Iacono.
