Small Church of Sant' Anna

email print

Description

The church of St. Anna dates back to the first half of the sixteenth century and was built almost on the sea. Until the thirties of this century, the island families made pilgrimages in Ischia by boat on July 26, on the occasion of the celebration of St. Anna, to honor the saint and go for then a picnic. The term ‘small church’ is somewhat inappropriate, it is located just across the Aragonese Castle, before the Tower of Michelangelo, it consists simply of a small chapel, built where once was the cemetery of Ischia, containing an altar and a statue of the Holy that in the folk tradition is the patron of pregnant women.
To reach the island throughout the year there are only two ways: by sea or through an alley behind the church of Our Lady of Carmine, loc. Cappella.
Coinciding with the celebration of St. Anne, which occurs on July 26, accessible also via the road that leads to the Tower of Michelangelo, through a gate opened specially for the occasion, while this route is impractical for the rest of the year with the opening of the Tower of Michelangelo or of Guevara.

Church of San Domenico

Description

The church of San Domenico, classified by the Superintendency of Monuments, as "rocky church" in the fifteenth century. There, in fact, was open in the XVcentury. There, in fact, opened a convent of Dominicans in 1469. The Dominicans lived there about two centuries, until the middle of 600 when they had to leave the convent because the community did not reach the minimum number of three people, just the bull of Innocent X of October 15, 1652. The present church, however, is not that one of the fifteenth century because it was partially destroyed by an earthquake in 1557. It has undergone many renovations. The current Central cona results from an extension between the end of the 60s or early 70s of the XIX century, the left aisle is evident as seen by the most recent different structure. After these additions, the church was blessed by Bishop Felice Romano. The last renovation took place in the years 1983/84 and was consecrated by Bishop Antonio Pagano on May 27, 1990. The painting of the Madonna del Rosario, that is now at the center of the cona is the most ancient that there is in this church.

Parr. St. Dominico SS. Annunziata

email print

Description

In the seventeenth century in this area there was a church dedicated to St. Sebastiano where Annunciation of Mary was venerated. We do not know if it has changed the title or, having been abandoned, it was built another church under the name of the Annunciation, which was restored in 1792. Inside you can admire a beautiful altar and toile and a few more marbles of the eighteenth century. The bell and clock tower are highlighted by a cover of majolica. The upper part of facade is covered with a coating of finely decorated with tiles in the center cross of Malta and starry flowers in the corners. They represented two figurative scenes, the Annunciation and Vision of St. John Joseph, which was originally to be located higher up, then moved lower in 1896: the valuable work carried out was probably a shop and the Annunciation had to be done, however, by Neapolitan maiolica artist completed in 1781. To equip the church with bells summoned the good heart of the people who offered their objects of gold, which merged with other precious metals gave rise to their creation. Temple and meeting place, where old farmers during the sunset of feast days, met to greet the country gentleman with a harmonious chanting, dedicated to Lady.
